Arly Rodriguez '21 and Yana Jayampathy '22 received an Honorable Mention in the advocacy category of the Bedford 2020 Greenlight Award competition, a program that provides students with a framework, support, and incentives to create sustainable initiatives.
Their project, Ride and Reduce, addresses environmental degradation associated with carbon emissions and other pollutants that are released by gasoline combustion. They developed strategies for engaging RCDS students and faculty on the topic of sustainable transportation; reducing the carbon footprint of school commutes; encouraging alternate forms of transportation like carpooling, trains, and walking; and educating the school community on the adverse environmental impacts of a single family's car commute. Although the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them from fully implementing their plans, Arly and Yana presented their project virtually on Sunday, April 19, and impressed the panel of 14 judges.
