Raishaun McGhee is a recipient of the Golden Dozen Scholar Athlete Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement academically and athletically. Additionally, Raishaun McGhee received the Vincent and Bill Draddy Scholarship that is given annually at this event.
Varsity Wrestling:The team took on Hopkins School last Friday in the Lower Gym. After losing to them at the FAAs, we had a much more competitive match this time around. Although we lost the match, we won four out of seven matches on the mat. Curtis (Tyler) Wilson and Max Wright, each wrestled well and were up on points, before falling a little short. Curtis Wilson wrestled an additional exhibition match, where he won by pin. Dylan Bronson continued to do what he does well, by beating a tough Hopkins opponent by a decisive margin. The best match of the day was clearly at 182lbs., where George Matelich was bumped up a weight class to challenge Hopkin's All-FAA star wrestler. It was a very tight and low scoring match in regulation, and eventually went to overtime. George Matelich caught his opponent in a whizzer, and put him to his back where he eventually won by pin. Pete Sanchez, showing much improvement, also won his match for the Wildcats. Although we lost the match 43-34, we dominated most of our matches. This week we host Hackley on Tuesday, then travel to Long Island Lutheran on Saturday for the NY Private School State Tournament. Winners at the "states" will have the opportunity to compete at the National Preps hosted at Lehigh University.
Varsity Fencing: On Saturday, February 2, the fencing team brought 19 representatives to the ISFL Individual Tournament. The tournament featured over 100 fencers representing seven schools. Maddy Gallagher took home the gold to repeat as Women's Saber Champion. Maddy Gallagher won in dramatic fashion, beating the same opponent as she did last year in winning the tournament. In other competition, Emma Chu took home a bronze in the Women's Foil, losing in the semifinals to the eventual champion. The other Wildcat fencers all fenced very well on the day, many hitting new personal heights. The competition should prove to be a great stepping stone to further success in the final weeks of the season.
Girls' Varsity Basketball: The team is now 16-2 after going 2-1 last week. We posted victories versus Greenwich Academy 56-23, Convent of the Sacred Heart 58-54, and suffered a loss to Rye HS 50-47. Carolyn Binder (averaged 22 ppg), Tara Berger (averaged a double/double), and Nereida Mendez (averaged 7ppg/5assists per game) for the week. Zoe Verni had her best all around game versus CSH scoring 11 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out 5 assists. Jenn Howland has developed to become both an inside and outside threat. Maria McEnroe has returned to provide us with valuable minutes. Jess Grasso, Melanie Mandell, Olivia Sullivan, and Maddy Cooper continue to provide valuable contributions on both ends of the court. The team is now 5-0 in the Fairchester League coming down the stretch and hopes to secure the home court advantage during the FAA Tournament. We will travel to St Luke’s on February 5, host Masters on February 8, and play Hackley on Sunday February 10 at Fieldston in the Coaches versus Cancer benefit. We look forward to your support!!!!
Boys' Varsity Basketball: The team continues to have an up and down season. Since the great overtime victory, the Wildcats have lost three straight games. Tyler Fernandez and Salim Green both continue to shine offensively, averaging around 20 points per game. Freshman Matt Farber has worked his way into the starting lineup and is getting better and better every day. Junior Jack Zenkel has also worked his way into the starting lineup and has added much-needed scoring and rebounding. Sophomore Vince Conn is seeing more minutes, and we will need his three-point shot down the stretch. Senior co-captain Ignacio de Lera has been playing well, and juniors James McPhail, Alex Kassin, and Dylan Bass have all been playing well and contributing solid minutes. The Wildcats hope to finish the last 4 league games on a good note in preparation for the post season.
Boys' Varsity Ice Hockey: The team hosted the Kingswood-Oxford School as part of the Boys/Girls Ice Hockey first "Pink in the Rink" Game. Wearing special pink jerseys, the team came out and moved the puck very well and was able to control much of the game. In the end, goals by Matt Crowley, James Kissell, Serafim Rocco, and two by Zach Coppola propelled the team to a 5-2 win. On Saturday, the team traveled north to Marlboro, Mass., to take on Worcester Academy. After a sluggish start that saw the team fall behind 2- 0, the team started to find its legs in the second period. Goals by Zach Coppola and two by Kyle Halloran helped the team secure a 3-3 tie. On Monday, February 4, Greenwich HS came to RCDS and it was a very physical and hard fought game. Eric Herbst played well in net and kept the game close throughout. In the end, Greenwich won 2-0. This week, the team travels to King on Wednesday, and then has St Thomas Moore coming to RCDS on Saturday.
Girls' Varsity Ice Hockey: On Monday, January 28, the team was scheduled to travel to Portledge. Unfortunately the game was cancelled due to bad weather. On Wednesday, January 30, the Wildcats hosted Morristown-Beard for a special “Pink in the Rink” sponsored game. The team lost 4-0, but on the bright side, the team raised funds for breast cancer research. The hockey team now has an overall record of 12-3. The Wildcats will next face Summit High School on Tuesday, February 5, at home at 4:45pm.
Girls' Varsity Squash: The team is really working hard to put some final adjustments into its game before heading to Hartford this weekend. The US High School Championships will be played at Trinity College and surrounding area prep schools beginning Friday morning. RCDS's first match is Friday at 10 a.m., at Loomis Chafee, and the van will be pulling out of the parking lot at 6:45 a.m. The eight women that will be competing are Caroline Kimmel, Liz Judd, Clare McClintock, Catherine Kimmel, Maddie Pierpont, Yana Lee, Michelle Haut, and Gabby Johnson. They are looking fierce and are excited for the tournament. On Wednesday, the team will host Westover School at 3:30 p.m. Last year, we defeated Westover but had very competitive matches. This will be a good warm up for the weekend and hopefully get the girls' heads into "game mode."
Boys' Varsity Squash: The team played King last Friday and came away with a 7-0 win. Jack Mattson and Kyle Eagan led the way in the number 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Nathan Spring, Jonathan Singer, Thomas Ragucci, Chase Goddard, Malcolm Nash, Jackson Adler, and Andy Rochat also won their matches to secure the victory. With the win, the team improves to 12-4 on the season. Today, the team will travel to Hartford, Conn., to participate in the High School National Championships. The boys are the number 2 seed in Division II and are looking to have a successful weekend.
