Athletics News for the Week of February 16-22, 2013

Presentation for Award Recognition for JV and Varsity Winter Athletes:

WINTER JV ATHLETES: JV Coaches will hold a recognition meeting at the completion of the season with the players. At this time, all players will be presented with a "JV Letter" and Presentation by the Coaches. This meeting is mandatory and the final commitment to the season.

WINTER VARSITY ATHLETES: The Winter Athletic Awards' Evening is on Thursday, March 7. The format has been slightly adjusted from last year to provide meaningful time for coaches to speak, present awards, and provide a more intimate environment for the players, coaches, and parents.
5:30-6:50pm: Players, Coaches, and Parents will meet in a previously assigned area for dinner (as in the past organized by the team parents). Each player will be presented with his/her varsity letter/plaque and the coaches will summarize the season in addition to highlighting all of the athletes.
7:00-8:00pm: All varsity teams will move to the Performing Arts Center, where presentations will take place for All League and Honorable Mention awards, and the Wildcat and Coaches Awards.

Varsity Wrestling: Our team competed at the NY Preps State Championship Meet, which had been rescheduled to Wednesday, due to the snow storm. All of our Wildcats battled bravely against all foes. We had four wrestlers who placed and stood on the podium at the end of the day. Pete Sanchez finished 5th at 113lbs. John Almodovar, Dylan Bronson, and George Matelich all won their quarterfinal rounds, but lost in tight matches after that. All three wrestlers finished in 4th place. All in all, our young wrestlers gained valuable experience, and the veterans gave their best effort.

Varsity Fencing: The team enters not only its final week, but perhaps its busiest week of the season. The Wildcats will host three meets consecutively starting Wednesday the 20th through Friday the 22nd. Respectively, Greenwich HS, St. Ann's, and Irvington will face off against us as the season winds to its close. The varsity fencers will conclude the season at the ISFL Team Tournament, hosted by Hackley, on Saturday the 23rd. We look forward to closing out the season in the same manner we fought all season: with strength and honor.

Girls' Varity Basketball: The team ended its regular season versus Holy Child in a hard fought contest. Holy Child won the close game 52-47 which left the Wildcats with an 18-4 regular season record. Carolyn Binder lead all scorers with 21 points to go along with 4 assists. Others who contributed were: Tara Berger (8points/8 rebounds), Nereida Mendez (8 points/5 assists), Maria McEnroe (4 points), Melanie Mandell and Zoe Verni each with 3 points respectively.

We have secured 1st place in the FAA tournament and have home court advantage throughout the playoffs which begins on Wednesday, February 20.

Boys' Varsity Basketball: The team ended the regular season with two losses. With those losses we fell to 7th place in the league and will face Brunswick on Wednesday, February 20 in the first round of the FAA tournament. It's been an up and down regular season for us but we are excited about making a serious run in the FAA tournament with hopes of a bid to NYSAIS.

Tyler Fernandez and Salim Green continue to lead the way in scoring and Ignacio de Lera played two solid games against Greens Farms and St. Luke’s.

Boys' Varsity Hockey: The team welcomed Rye Town / Harrison to RCDS on Tuesday, February 12.  The Wildcats came out strong and dominated the game from the start.  Goals were scored by James Kissell, Zach Coppola, Patrick Kissell, Serafim Rocco, and Kyle Halloran for a 9 - 1 win.  Michael Mossman got the win for the Wildcats in the net.  On Thursday, February 14, the team finished up its regular season schedule with a game against St Thomas More from Connecticut.  In a back and forth game the Wildcats eventually came out on top 6-5.  Goals were scored by Zach Coppola, James Kissell, Will Halloran, Kyle Halloran, Michael Rocco, and Blake Beber.  Eric Herbst got the win in net for the team.  This week sees the Wildcats are hosting a FAA semi-final game on Thursday and the finals will be at RCDS on Saturday, February 23.

Girls' Varsity Ice Hockey: On Wednesday, February 13, the team lost to Albany Academy 3-0. Goaltender, Rebecca Mendelsohn made 34 saves. The team’s overall record is now 14-4. The next home game is Wednesday, February 20, versus Millbrook, followed by senior day on Saturday, February 23, against Worcester Academy.

Girls' Varsity Squash: The season is sadly coming to an end. Last Thursday we paid tribute to two fantastic seniors, Liz Judd and Clare McClintock.   Both have been tremendous assets to the team.   We then proceeded to beat Holy Child 7-0. On Wednesday, February 20, the team hosts GFA for our last home match. On Friday, February 22, the top 7 players will leave at 3:15pm to travel to the Brooks School to play in the New England Championships.   Go, Wildcats!

Boys' Varsity Squash: This weekend, the team will travel to Deerfield Academy to play in the "A" Division of the New England Championships. Out of 42 teams in New England, it is wonderful that we have been selected as one of the top 16 again this year. We hope to improve upon our 9th place finish in last years' tournament. Despite graduating five seniors last year, the team has been able to continue playing at the highest level, playing spirited squash throughout the season. John Shuck, James Pierpont, Matt Swain, Carl Shuck, Will Chai, Jared Yanis, Jack Mattson, Eli Rattner, Teddy Tananbaum, and Kyle Eagan deserve a great deal of credit for their efforts this season, earning a 12-4 overall record. Over the weekend, the top seven players will compete in matches from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon to determine the New England Champion. If you see the boys around campus please wish them luck this weekend. Finally, thank you to all the parents for the tremendous support this year!
