Girls' Varsity Lacrosse: The team had a very strong week. The Wildcats put three big W's in the win column beating St. Luke’s, Convent of the Sacred Heart, and Hopkins. The team record is 5-1. The week started at St. Luke’s. The Wildcats dominated the game from start to finish. Summer Elbardissy had a nice game in goal. Stephanie Sabatini, Clare McClintock, and Zoe Verni worked hard to manage draw control. Julia Massaro scored goals at some critical times. The team won 13-9.
The most exciting game and win came against Convent of the Sacred Heart. The Wildcats came out strong scoring first and controlling the draw. The entire game was a battle back and forth right down to the final minutes. With two minutes on the clock, the Wildcats were down by two goals. After a timeout, the team got the ball quickly into the offensive end, and Emily Duarte scored. With the Wildcats now down by one, Kat DiCaprio set up Emily Duarte for a shot on goal with a crafty play. The play was executed successfully, and Emily Duarte scored a beautiful goal. Stephanie Sabatini, who played an outstanding game, had a key interception during the final minutes. With just fifteen seconds left, Clare McClintock was awarded an 8 meter shot. Despite the pressure, she put the ball deep in the net for the game-winning goal. The 10-9 victory, over CSH, was a first for Rye Country Day in at least 13 years. It was a sweet win for the team. So many players stood out in the game. It was a true team effort from the first to final whistle. Ruby Aresty had one of the best games the coaches have ever seen her play. Sophie Beshar played very well with the offense, and Charlotte Fleishman had some critical saves in the final minutes. The coaches were impressed by Zoe Kost, Samantha Kost, Yana Lee, and Kat DiCaprio's ability to play under pressure.
The team was on the road on Saturday at Hopkins. Despite a tiring week, the team was able to maintain a high level of play. The coaches were pleased with how the team came out on the field. They maintained control and worked hard to keep the ball in our offensive end. When Hopkins got into our defensive end, they quickly took the ball to goal. Annie Grayer took control of the defense and made some key plays in the last ten minutes of the game. The final score was 10-7. Maddy Cooper, Acacia Dougan, Francesca Venture, and Ciara Clare all played well for the Wildcats. The team goes into another big week of games. On Tuesday, the Wildcats travel to cross-town rival Holy Child. On Friday, the Wildcats host the Greens Farms Academy Dragons.
Boys' Varsity Lacrosse: The team rebounded nicely from losses to Canterbury and Gunnery by defeating FAA foes St. Luke’s and Kingswood-Oxford. These two victories keep us tied for first place in the FAA with a 4-0 record. While we did not play our crispest game against St. Luke’s, we made enough plays to come away with the 5-4 victory. The defense was great in executing our game plan, and we got great individual play from Jonathan Singer and Michael Farber. Andrew Antonacci did an outstanding job shutting down their biggest scoring threat; he was a key part of holding him pointless. Offensively, Thomas Chai got us on the board with a nice individual effort, and Tyler Miller continued to impress with his ability to create his own shot; he ended the game with three goals. Justin Weissman's game winner came off a great cut, and an equally great feed from Tommy Garry. Last Saturday, we traveled to West Hartford to play Kingswood-Oxford in what is typically a tightly contested game. This year was no different. Again, we got solid play from the defense, which included some great saves from Michael Farber and some beautiful goals from the offense. Overall, it was a great team victory. Tomorrow, we take another trip to the Hartford area to take on Suffield Academy. This starts a stretch where we play seven games during the next two weeks.
Varsity Baseball: The team finished the week 2 and 1, bringing the overall record to 5 and 3 (5 and 1 in the FAA). The week started with a victory over GFA. Tyler Fernandez went the distance, earning his third win on the mound (3-0) while striking out 10. Freshman Ryan Wolitzer debuted in left going 2 for 4 with a double and scoring 2 runs. Liam Dalton and Peter Shu each had a hit and drove in two runs apiece. The final was 6 to 2 RCDS. Andrew Waite pitched the KING game and went 6 1/3 innings, striking out 8 for his best outing of the year. Enzo Stefanoni came in to get the final two outs of the game and the win. (Enzo Stefanoni is 2-0). Tied at one going into the home half of the 7th, Luke Cappellano doubled down the 3rd baseline. Quinn Kurzner moved the runner to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt. Peter Shu followed getting hit by the pitch. Andrew Starker came to bat with a drawn in infield and singled home the game-winning run. The final game of the week saw Fieldston defeat the Wildcats. Quinn Kurzner had the only RBI on the day, and Liam Dalton, Peter Shu, Matt Webster, Erik Hanson, and Dylan Misisco each had a hit. It was freshman Dylan Misisco's first varsity hit.
Varsity Softball: The team has improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the FAA after posting wins versus St. Luke’s 6-4 and Riverdale 16-6. St. Luke’s was our toughest league game to date, and although we only had 7 hits, they were timely. Taylor Forte led all hitters going 3-4, which included a triple and RBI. AmberRose Nelson followed with a double and 2 RBIs. Sydney Ginsberg added 2 hits and Nereida Mendez added a hit and RBI. Our defense continues to impress. Lily Velona made 2 outstanding catches in right field. Left fielder Taylor Forte and center fielder Melanie Mandell continue to shut teams down with their solid play. Eve Wulf remains steady, only walking 2 and striking out 2 to get the win. In our win versus Riverdale, our bats came alive as we belted out 19 hits with every player getting at least 1 hit. After giving up 4 runs in the top of the 1st, we refocused as Nereida Mendez and Taylor Forte combined to go 7-7 with 4 RBIs. Sydney Ginsberg went 3-5 (2 RBIs), Jess Grasso 2-5 (2 RBIs), AmberRose Nelson 2-4 (2 RBIs), Melanie Mandell, and Lily Velona each had a hit and RBI. Maria McEnroe, Hailey Nicholson, and Eve Wulf had a hit apiece. Eve Wulf scattered 7 hits while giving up 2 walks and striking out 2 to get the win. We hope to continue our winning ways as we travel to Greens Farms on Tuesday, April 22 and host Good Counsel on Friday, April 26.
Boys' Varsity Tennis: Last week the team traveled to Millbrook School for an exciting "college format" match consisting of six players all playing doubles matches followed by each participant playing in the singles venue. Robert Levine, Jack Alpert, Tyler Tananbaum, and Ted Tananbaum were each victorious in their doubles matches. In the singles format, Sam Hearst, Bo Curry, Ted Tananbaum, Tyler Tananbaum, and Robert Levine were each victorious. The team ended with a 7-1 victory. On Thursday the team had a home match against FAA defending champion Hopkins School. The team fought valiantly but lost by a score of 5-2. The doubles teams of Jonathan Faxon and Ryan Sobel and Nick Kemp and Paul Leake were each victorious. Worthy of mentioning was Ted Tananbaum's match in the #3 singles position. It went to a 9-7 third set tie-breaker. Through it all, Ted Tananbaum never gave up in the back-and-forth score. This week the team has two away games and one home game. On the road we will face Brunswick and Hamden Hall, and on Friday the team will play the King School at home.
Varsity Sailing: The team competed in the NYISA-SE League Fleet Race Invitational Regatta at The Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay on Saturday, April 20. The team competed against 10 other schools and finished in 4th place. The sailors sailed in some very challenging conditions with high winds and frequent wind shifts. Peter Duncan, Andrew Rochat, Julie Kahn, and Allison Conn sailed in the A division. Cooper Yeager, David Yelsey, and Julie Kahn sailed in the B division. The sailors had a long day on the water completing 18 races in total between the two divisions. The team looks forward to more practice this week and returning to The Waterfront Center this Saturday, April 27, for another Fleet Race Invitational Regatta.
Girls' Varsity Golf: Last week was a busy one for the team. The Wildcats played three matches, hosting two and traveling to Sterling Farms in Stamford. On Monday, eight girls took on Riverdale and completed a clean sweep, winning 8-0. The players were Summer and Jasmine Kitahara, Kate Weiss, Madi Friedman, Bryce Smith, Emily Gorin, Andie Hearst, and Stef Kligman.
On Tuesday, the players were fortunate enough to go practice chipping and putting with Nick, the pro at Old Oaks Country Club, and then put their lesson to work on a few holes. On Wednesday, we hosted Holy Child. Summer Kitahara, Bryce Smith, and Andie Hearst quickly finished off their opponents in five holes. Jasmine Kitahara, Kate Weiss, and Madison Friedman quickly followed, closing out their matches up 4 with 3 holes left to play. Thursday was a dreary, drizzly day, and the girls played the King School at Sterling Farms in Stamford. The matches were clos,e but we pulled out a 4.5. - .5 win. Summer Kitahara was +1 hitting a clutch final putt on nine to win her match. Emily Gorin closed out her match being +2 at the end of the eighth hole. Samantha Friedwald took hers all the way to the ninth green to end in a tie. Stefanie Kligman also finished off her opponent on the eight green, and freshman Nicole Schumaker, playing in her first regulation match, won her match in a decisive five holes!
Boys' Varsity Golf: The team improved its record to 4-2 with wins over Horace Mann and Portledge. The team only won four matches all of last year, so this year has been a great turnaround for the team. Leading the resurgence of the team is Theo Humphrey, Zachary Coppola, Daniel Tricarico, and Reed Waggoner. Next up for the team is King at Sterling Farms this week.
Varsity Track and Field: At the Masters Meet, the girls were victorious, defeating Masters and Holy Child. Victories on the track were won by senior Julie Shanus in the long jump, freshman Olivia Sullivan in the triple jump and the 100 meter dash, freshman Jinjer Pearce in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and sophomore Caroline Kimmel in the 400 meters. The 4x100 meter team of freshmen Olivia Sullivan and Jinjer Pearce, sophomore Caroline Kimmel, and senior Julie Shanus was victorious in a swift time of 52.1 seconds. Other scoring performances were achieved by junior Franchesca Pena, who finished 2nd in the 1500 meters and in the process qualified for the NYSAIS Championship meet. Freshman Tori Katz finished 2nd and 3rd in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. In the 800 meter run, freshman Maddy Pierpont and sophomore Sarah Brodwolf finished in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, gaining huge points for the team. In addition to Julie Shanus's win in the long jump, Olivia Sullivan finished in 2nd place, and sophomore Sophie Grayer finished in 4th place. Lastly, the 4x400 meter relay squad, consisting of Maddy Pierpont, Franchesca Pena, Sarah Brodwolf, and freshman Sabrina Piccinini, finished in second place in probably the most exciting race of the afternoon. The girls have a big week as they will compete at Hackley on Tuesday, April 23, and the Gold Rush Invitational at Clarkstown South High School on Saturday, April 27. On Thursday, April 25, Julie Shanus, Caroline Kimmel, Jinjer Pearce, and Olivia Sullivan will head to Philadelphia to compete at the prestigious Penn Relays. They will be running the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relays versus some of the top teams in the country. Over 50,000 people will be in attendance with over 3,000 high school, collegiate, and professional athletes competing. Please wish them luck as they represent RCDS.
The boys finished in 2nd place to the Masters School on April 16. Even though the team was short-handed, the team still had some great moments. The boys A and B 4 x 100 meter relays finished in 1st and 2nd place. The A - team of junior Alec Boccanfuso, freshman Jimmy Sandling, junior Dylan Bronson, and senior Andrew Gillen ran a solid time of 46.02. The B - team of freshmen Raul Quintero, Luis Garcia, Kyle Eagan, and junior Nat Cooney also ran well. Freshman Jackson Adler won the 3000 meter run with a very spirited race. Jackson Adler ran a very tactical and confident race and answered every challenge from a pesky Masters runner who stalked him during the race. Sophomore Ryan Wilk was also victorious in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 18.7 seconds. Jimmy Sandling had a good day, finishing in 2nd place in the 100 meters (11.9), 200 meters (24.5), and the long jump (18'4). The boys will next be in action at Hackley on April 23, and then at the Mamaroneck Relays on Saturday, April 27.
