English Department Ties Together Love and Literature

As a special Valentine's Day gift to the community, members of the Rye Country Day School English Department selected and wrapped a curated collection of hundreds of books. For each book, a teacher wrote a brief description without giving away the title - "Thrilling tale of a Forensic Detective! NY Times best seller! If you like TV's Bones, this is the one for you!" "A sweeping history book about the last days of the Civil War." "Quick, clever, self-destructive protagonist...has been censored in some places." Students and teachers then sorted through the books to find their "blind date with a book." Thank you to our English faculty for inspiring a love of reading, and for all of the energy and effort that went into this joyful project.

Early Matriculation List for the Class of 2019

While it is still early in the process for the Class of 2019, most students have already received acceptances as a result of "early action", "restrictive early action," "rolling," and "early decision" applications. As a matter of practice, RCDS only posts matriculation decisions once they are final. Many students have received acceptances that are not reflected below, but are waiting to make a final decision because the acceptance they have received is non-binding. It is important to RCDS and to our students that we respect and preserve the privacy of the college decision-making process by only posting matriculation selections when they are final.

To date, 43 members of the Class of 2019 have committed to matriculate at:

Barnard College
Boston University
Brown University (3)
Bucknell University (2)
Columbia University
Cornell University (4)
Dartmouth College
Duke University (4)

The new technologies and spaces available in the Cohen Center for the Creative Arts have allowed students in the 3D Art program to expand their techniques, methods, and approaches to developing three dimensional designs. For example, students in Ceramics, Sculpture, and AP 3D Design have used a design thinking approach, relying on 3D printing and the laser cutter to create prototypes before moving on to master their final projects. Please stop by the CCCA to view the Upper School 3D Art exhibit, "Fabrications," which focuses on the act of fabricating an idea in clay, cardboard, wood, or a mix of materials.

Skills Spotlight: Service Learning in Spanish

Upper School Spanish teachers Ileana Hernández Carafas and Pam Sheehy partnered with Caritas in Port Chester to create a special program that combines upper level Spanish with Public Purpose. Once a month, Upper School Spanish students visit Caritas to assist with setting up tables for lunch service, bagging fresh produce, loading carts, and helping clients with their food selections. Throughout their time at Caritas, students communicate with clients in Spanish, providing an authentic opportunity to practice the language outside of the classroom.

"We all had a truly enriching and heartwarming experience. Everything we saw - from the display of the many flags of Latino countries hanging in a flowering tree, to the hand painted signs on the church doors proclaiming 'We are immigrants, not criminals!' - provided an invaluable true-to-life experience that could never be duplicated in a classroom. Students learned new vocabulary, but most important, they learned how to respectfully communicate with the the people they served, providing them with options and assisting them with making decisions for their families. The students were truly happy afterwards. We are so proud of them!" ~Ileana Hernández Carafas and Pam Sheehy.

Connections to RCDS Learning Goals:

SKILLS
  • Communicate in more than one language and across difference.
  • Practice and value working with others with differing skills, backgrounds, and perspectives.
CITIZENSHIP
  • Practice empathy and perspective taking.
  • Understand communication in intercultural contexts.
