Varsity Field Hockey: The team had an outstanding week, beating both Canterbury and Gunnery. These were particularly good wins as we lost to both of these teams last year. The week started at home against Canterbury. The girls decided to wear crazy blue and gold for spirit. Maddy Cooper and Sophie Grayer really took their roles very seriously and showed an enormous amount of spirit.

The team came out strong against Canterbury and scored in the first ten minutes. Setting up for a penalty corner, Emily Duarte sent the ball out to Zoe Verni. After Zoe received the ball, she sent it right across the circle to Charlotte Cooper, who put the ball in the far left corner of the cage for a goal. It was a well-executed play and a great start to the game. RCDS scored again in the second half and was able to keep Canterbury out of their scoring circle. Emily Duarte scored the next goal with an assist from Zoe Verni. Eleven minutes into the half, Yana Lee scored the third and final goal to secure a 3-0 victory. Madeleine Pierpont and Zoe Verni played an intense game and were recognized for their outstanding play. Emma Santucci and Melanie Mandell shared the shutout. Nicole Schumaker and Hannah van der Vord got to experience their third varsity game and are growing more confident with each game. The coaches appreciate the time Allie Conn has devoted to helping our less experienced players during the first games of the season. The varsity and junior varsity teams want to send a huge thank you to Coach Katie Sandling. Coach Katie volunteered her time and was a valuable member of the coaching staff. We appreciate all the energy she devoted to the varsity and JV players and the program. On Friday, the varsity and junior varsity teams took a field trip to watch Columbia play Brown. It was a wonderful experience for the girls. We got to the field in time to watch them warm up. The Columbia team was particularly impressive; their dynamic warmup and intensity set an example for us to strive to achieve in pre-game preparation. The RCDS players and coaches learned a great deal, and it was a good bonding experience. Columbia won the game 4-1. On Saturday the team traveled to Gunnery. The coaches were impressed with the team's focus and work ethic after the long bus ride. The girls quickly adapted to the grass field, scored first, and had another solid start. The game went back and forth, and the Wildcats dominated the majority of the play. However, failing to capitalize on some key scoring opportunities did not help RCDS maintain a lead on the scoreboard. We went into the second half down by one goal. Nathalie Chan had an excellent first half. She played a consistent and grounding game. Chriss Sandling did a great job managing the scorebook and keeping the team organized on the sideline. The grass required us to make some formation and position changes. Everyone adapted well and was willing to try anything to put the ball in the net. Kathleen Curtin, Michelle Haut, Caroline Nicholson, Sophie Beshar, and Madeleine Pierpont stepped up their game in the second half. Charlotte Cooper did a great job on the forward line. Hailey Nicholson and Emma Santucci did well working together when we took a defender out and added an offensive player. Natalie Needle stepped on the field during a pressure filled time and did well as a young athlete, maintaining her composure. With just ten minutes left in the game, Emily Duarte's coast-to-coast play helped get the ball down the field. Yana Lee put her signature on the ball's final journey into the goal. The game was now tied 2-2 and remained a tie until the final whistle. The overtime consisted of a 7 vs 7 sudden victory, ten-minute overtime period. The girls practice this two or three times a week. We talk about strategy and put the fastest kids on the field. This preparation paid off. Zoe Verni scored just 58 seconds into the period. It was a beautiful goal set up by Yana Lee. The girls stormed the field and celebrated the 3-2 OT win. It was a great day for the RCDS Wildcats. Sophie Beshar has stepped up her game this season and played two excellent games this week. Sophie and Yana were recognized for her outstanding play. The team is now 3-0 and look forward to hosting King on Tuesday.

Varsity Football: The football team will be playing at Our Lady of Lourdes tonight at 7:00. The Wildcats are led by its strong senior class, and the team is 1-0 on the season.

Varsity Cross Country: The team's season finally got underway this past week with its first race. The 5K race, held at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, included all the teams from the FAA, and provided an excellent measuring stick for our progress so far. There were some outstanding performances, particularly from the new runners, proving that RCDS would be a very competitive team this year. On the boys' side, junior Malcolm Nash led the way for the team, placing 12th overall with a time of 18:23, beating his personal best time from last year by a full two minutes! Remarkably, the next two finishers for RCDS were both freshmen: Jack Parkin and Henry Cho. Junior Justin Chun finished close behind, followed by a pair of sophomores, Jackson Adler and Jack Alpert. Clearly, RCDS has a great deal of young talent, and the presence of these talented underclassmen is all the more vital, given that both of  boys' team captains have been sidelined with injuries. On the girls' side, junior co-captain Acacia Dougan again set the pace for RCDS, finishing 9th overall with a time of 22:17. Similar to the boys, however, the big story was the new runners: freshmen Elena Kim and Madeleine Nicholson both finished in the top-4 for the team, along with new sophomore runner Amanda Cutler. The amount of toughness and dedication these young runners have displayed has been truly remarkable. The team has another busy week coming up. On Wednesday, we will travel to Rockwood Park along the Hudson River for a race against Masters, Holy Child, Sacred Heart, GA, and Brunswick. Then on Saturday, we take our annual trip to Cheshire, Conn., for the O'Connell Invitational. This meet is always a favorite, as it provides a great opportunity to race against teams outside of the FAA. In addition to the running, the RCDS Cross Country team has been volunteering. This past Saturday, we participated in the Annual International Coastal Clean-Up at Edith Read Sanctuary. The Sanctuary has been very generous in allowing us to use its trails for training and for our annual home meet, so it was great to give a little time back in the form of picking up trash off the beach.

Girls' Varsity Tennis: The team has played two excellent matches since the last report. On Tuesday, September 17, the team traveled to Byram Hills. Each match was 2 out of 3 sets, with AD scoring. Our #2 doubles team of Hannah Needle and Emily Moran made quick work of their match, winning 6-2, 6-2. Summer Kitahara and Gabby Johnson, #2 and 3 singles, respectively, both won hard-fought matches in two sets. With each team having won 3 matches, it came down to the final doubles match of the day. All the spectators, players, and coaches were treated to an exciting game of tennis. First, RCDS went up by 3 games, then Byram Hills led by a game. Back and forth it went. In the 10-point, super tie breaker to determine the match, the Byram Hills team won 10-7, thus winning the match. Congratulation to our entire team for a well played match. Congratulations to the varsity tennis team, which won its first match of the season, beating Riverdale at Riverdale, 5-3 on Monday, September 23. The team played well, and it was exciting to see some of the shots and strategies that we have been working on used in match play. Singles players Gabby Johnson and Gabi Salomon won their matches 8-5 and 8-4, respectively. In a tie breaker, the #1 doubles team of Maria McEnroe and Emily Moran came out on top, 9-8. Connie Blatt and Izzy Brown made quick work of their opponents, 8-3, as did the team of Hannah Needle and Jess Grasso, winning 8-2. All in all, it was a fantastic team win!

Boys' Varsity Soccer: The team had a fantastic week.  It played its season opener versus Hackley on Monday and tied the game 1-1.  Hackley scored first, and the Wildcats fought back to tie the game in the second half.  The defense played extremely well. Seniors Tyler Kaye, Max Weisman and Henry Towley, along with junior Luke Cappellano, were solid in the back. Marco Bohorquez gave the team a needed spark off the bench. Paul Leake scored the equalizer off a corner kick. On Tuesday, the team travelled to Brooklyn to face Packer Collegiate. The Wildcats came up fired up. Paul Leake scored a hat trick in the first 15 minutes of play.  David Townley scored his first two varsity goals along with Austin Weber, who also scored his first varsity goal.  Billy Sobel and Kevin Collado added a goal each to absolutely dominate performance. Blake Beber started his first game of the season in goal.  The Wildcats won the game 8-1. On Thursday, we travelled to face our FAA rivals, KING. The Wildcats scored first on a beautiful volley by senior captain Kevin Collado. KING tied the game on a penalty kick, but with 15 minutes left in the game, Kevin Collado played the ball through to Paul Leake, who beat the keeper to the ball to score the winning goal.  Mikey Farber played an outstanding game in goal with 10 saves. On Saturday, the team played Rye High School under the lights at their home field and beat them 2-0. This was a outstanding team performance from start to finish. Ryan Wilk, Michael Karr, Jon Faxon, Andrew Antonacci and Jared Yanis all played extremely well. It was a tight, 0-0 contest until the 58th minute Kevin Collado scored off a Jared Yanis corner kick. Paul Leake scored in the 63rd minute on a beautiful volley assisted by Kevin Collado. Mikey Farber played a great game in goal to earn the team’s first shutout of the season. The team plays Hamden Hall on Tuesday and St. Luke's on Thursday; both are FAA contests.  On Saturday, the team travels to face a tough Cheshire Academy.  Thank you all for the support.  Go, Wildcats!!!

Girls' Varsity Soccer: Since the last writing, the girls have kept up their winning ways. Last Thursday’s victory at Greens Farms Academy was well deserved, as the team played so well. This was our first victory against GFA in four years. Our midfield play was awesome in this game, which was led by Sophie Brown, Casey Berkowitz and Sam Kost. Freshman Taylor Regan scored her first career goal to put us up one and had many terrific plays. While we dominated play for the majority of the game, we could not convert our opportunities until just under three minutes remained, when Ruby Aresty scored off Taylor Regan’s corner kick. This victory was a great sign of how well this team is capable of playing. On Saturday, Hopkins paid us a visit. While we did not have the same intensity as the previous game, we played well enough to secure a 2-0 victory. Julia Massaro was terrific as our last defender; she stopped numerous scoring chances from developing. Stephanie Sabatini scored two and a half minutes into the game, but it was not until nine minutes remained, when Jessica Cordiano scored a beautiful left-footed goal off of Charlotte Boehning’s pass, that we got the two-goal lead that we wanted. It was great to have Charlotte back on the field. Finally, the girls played a very solid game against Horace Mann on Monday. Stephanie Sabatini led the way with a hat trick, and Zoe Kost had one. Elizabeth Mastoloni was terrific from her defensive position, as well as when she moved up front to a more attacking role. Next up is another busy week, as we travel to Dalton, KING, and Riverdale.

Varsity Field Hockey: Last week, the team earned the #2 seed in the FAA tournament and hosted GFA for the first round. Natalie Needle was on fire on the post, scoring two of the four goals. Emily Duarte added the other two goals. Yana Lee also did a great job creating scoring situations for her teammates. The team won decisively, and Hannah van der Vord, Caroline Nicholson, Emma Santucci, Yana Lee, and Natalie Needle were all recognized for their outstanding play.

The team was excited to have an opportunity to play GA in the finals. Our only loss this season was to GA, and the team felt it had made huge strides since that game on October 8. The girls came out strong and implemented the plan the coaches had created. The defense played one of its most solid games of the season. Hailey Nicholson dominated the defense circle, carrying and passing the ball out of the circle. Emma Santucci had a total of 16 saves. The difference between this game and all our other games this season was our inability to generate goals. We had a strong defensive game but failed to create offensive opportunities. As a whole, the team played very well and at a higher caliber of play than our recent games. After a valiant effort, the Wildcats lost 0-4.

The team played in one final tournament this week. The team earned the #7 seed in the Class B New England Tournament. On Wednesday, we traveled to Pomfret School to play #2 St. Marks. St. Marks was a well coached and very talented team. The Wildcats played well but struggled to keep up with their fast pace and pin-point execution. The Wildcats lost to St. Marks and our season ended.

The team finished the season with a record of 15-3. The team finished 2nd in FAA, 2nd in Western New England and won their third consecutive NYSAISAA Championship. This team has a great deal to be proud of this season.

At Awards night the following girls were honored.
Wildcat Award: Emily Duarte
Coaches Award: Chriss Sandling
FAA All-League: Emily Duarte, Yana Lee and Zoe Verni
FAA Honorable Mention: Charlotte Cooper, Sophie Beshar, Kathleen Curtin
WNEPSFHA: Emily Duarte and Yana Lee
Captains for 2014: Sophie Beshar, Emily Duarte, Yana Lee, and Zoe Verni

The captains' parents organized a wonderful team dinner for Awards Night. We appreciated Mrs. Duarte, Mrs. Gordon, and Mrs. Verni's organization and help.

The Field Hockey team would like to thank Mr. Norman and Ms. Southard for taking care of us on the sidelines and getting us back on the field after an injury. We are lucky to have such caring and dedicated certified athletic trainers.

Special thanks to Ms. Haft, Mr. Wieman, and Mr. Nelson for their support throughout the season.

Varsity Football:The team finished the season with a 5-3 record and was second in the FAA. The Wildcats were led throughout the year by captains/seniors Tyler Miller, Dylan Bronson, James McPhail, Naropa Perez, Jeremy Levenson, Henry Alderson Smith, and Nathaniel Cooney. The Wildcats leading rushers were Christian Pankey, who rushed for 1028 yards and 10 TD’s; Dylan Bronson,, who rushed for 412 yards and 5 TD’s; Tyler Miller, 492 yards and 3 TD’s. James McPhail had 14 catches for 213 receiving yards, and Reed Connor passed for 373 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Dylan Bronson led the team with 63 tackles; Christian Pankey, 42; Ryan Wolitzer, 40, and Tyler Miller, 38. Eli Rattner led the team with 3.5 sacks, and James McPhail had 3 interceptions on the season. Congratulation to James McPhail, Tyler Miller, Dylan Bronson, and Christian Pankey for being selected All League. Ryan Wolitzer and Derick Wallace were selected as Honorable Mention All League. Lastly, our congratulations to Tyler Miller for receiving the Wildcat Award and Christian Pankey for receiving the Coaches Award. The coaching staff wants to thank the seniors for an outstanding year and career as RCDS Wildcat football players.

Varsity Cross Country: The team participated in its postseason NYSAIS race on Saturday morning at Van Courtland Park. Despite the chilly temperature, the Wildcats ran well, with junior co-captain Acacia Dougan winning a medal for her 21st-place finish. This performance was the exclamation point for Acacia's impressive season. She also earns FAA Honorable Mention Honors, as well as the team Wildcat Award for the second year in a row. Next year, she will be joined by first-year varsity runner Melody Hsu as captain of the girls' team. The girls will be losing only one senior next year, Franchesca Pena, but her leadership and unparalleled sportsmanship will be greatly missed. For her unflagging dedication and fine performance, Franchesca wins this year's Coach's Award. Junior Malcolm Nash similarly capped off his remarkable season with a strong 31st-place finish at NYSAIS. Malcolm has led the team all year, and was unanimously voted both captain and MVP. Joining him as captain will be rising junior Jackson Adler, who has been a staple of the varsity squad, in addition to offering a level of leadership uncommon for his age. In addition to our dedicated captains, Vlady Rachev and James Pierpont, the boys will unfortunately be losing several seniors to graduation, including Grant Khosla, Charles Khosla, Freddy Levenson, Jason Goettisheim, and Johnny Ma. Johnny, in fact, is this year's Coaches Award recipient, acknowledging his four years of unfailing dedication, impeccable sportsmanship, and steady improvement. He, also with all the seniors, will be greatly missed next year!

Girls' Varsity Tennis: The tennis season seemed to whip by. When we think back to our preseason at Greenwich Academy, and our first match vs. Horace Mann- it seems so long ago, but yet it went fast - too fast. The improvement that each and every team member made in practice was replicated in match play. The countless tennis balls that were hit from lobs, to overheads, volleys, and drop shots. The short ball became a chance for each player to swing at aggressively and confidently, but yet playing consistent tennis was a priority.   It did not matter whether it was singles or doubles play, the number 1 players or the number 4 players everyone contributed to our successful season.

In the end it came down to these telling numbers. As a collective group the Girls' Varsity Tennis team, Hannah Needle, Gabby Johnson, Summer Kitahara, Jessica Grasso, Constance Blatt, Gabi Soloman, Daphne Mandell, Izzy Brown, Maria McEnroe, Jasmine Kitahara, Hannah Weisman, and Emily Moran, won over 375 games, over 40 individual matches (and only lost 24) to bring the team to a FINAL record of 6 wins and 3 losses. Congratulations to the  Team. Congratulations to the individual award winners: 2013 Coaches Award, and Wildcat winners Jessica Grasso and Summer Kitahara, respectively. Leading the team in 2014 will be co-captains Izzy Brown and Daphne Mandell.

Girls' Varsity Soccer: The soccer season continues, and we now play in the semi-finals of the NEPSAC tournament. Tomorrow, we take on defending champion Brewster Academy. In Wednesday's first round game against Hamden Hall, the girls weathered the bitter cold temperature and played quality soccer. We definitely showed that we were the more talented team and dominated the action. Taylor Regan opened the scoring, and then Sam Kost found the back of the net about five minutes later. We continued to keep up the pressure, and Taylor Regan scored her second of the game. After Hamden Hall put one on the board, Nicola Leake's goal from Sophie Brown's corner kick gave us back momentum. The defense of Francesca Ventura, Julia Massaro, Ruby Aresty, Sarah Brodwolf, and Liz Mastoloni kept Hamden Hall's attackers at bay and the charge they tried to mount. Tomorrow should be an exciting game; we hope to see you there.

Boys' Varsity Soccer: The journey started on Monday, August 19, with the BEEP test and ended on Saturday, November 9, with us hoisting the FAA Boys’ Soccer tournament trophy. Our journey was a winding road. There were some speed bumps that slowed us down at times, but in the end we were able to put our feet on the gas pedal on the way to a very rewarding season. This year’s team was fortunate to have 11 seniors on its roster. There is no denying the influence that a strong group of seniors can have on a team. Leading this senior class were our captains, Alec Boccanfuso, Kevin Collado, and Andrew Starker. Leaders can have an impact on those around them in a variety of ways. Despite injuries, both Alec and Andrew were always there for their teammates, supporting them and providing words of encouragement. Their teammates were there to support both of them when needed. Kevin Collado, as a player, displayed boundless energy and a determination to always give his best effort, whether it was in practice or a game. Kevin’s play was truly inspiring to his teammates. The remaining seniors, Marco Bohorquez, Jelani Denis, Mikey Farber, Tyler Kaye, Paul Leake, Billy Sobel, Henry Townley, and Max Weisman were all major contributors to our successful season. This team finished the regular season being ranked 5th in the NYSAIS tournament. More impressive is the fact that we were undefeated in the FAA regular season, only giving up 1 goal in FAA competition. We were ranked #1 in the FAA tournament, giving us home field advantage. Victories over Masters in the semi-finals and GFA in the finals ended our journey. We would like to thank Ms. Haft, Ms. Southard, and Mr. Norman for their support of our team throughout the season.

Girls' Varsity Soccer: The season came to an end last Saturday against a talented Brewster Academy team. However, the girls have so much to be proud of, as they finished with a 13-4-3 record and won the FAA regular season title. Also to note, the team earned the number-one seed in all three tournaments that they played in - NYSAIS, FAA, and New England. Seniors Stephanie Sabatini and Ruby Aresty will be sorely missed, both as players and leaders. We appreciated all that they have given to this year's team and to the soccer program in general. Both of these girls were honored at Awards Night: Stephanie Sabatini won the Wildcat Award, Ruby Aresty was the recipient of the Coaches Award. Several players garnered all league honors, as well. Stephanie Sabatini, Julia Massaro, Taylor Regan, Francesca Ventura, Sarah Brodwolf, and Sophie Brown were named to the all-FAA team, and Zoe Kost was named Honorable Mention all-FAA. Stephanie Sabatini, Julia Massaro, and Taylor Regan were also named Western New England All-Stars. The future looks bright for the girls' soccer program, which will be led in 2014 by captains Sophie Brown, Sarah Brodwolf, Francesca Ventura, and Julia Massaro.

Boys' Varsity Ice Hockey: The team took to the ice last Monday, looking to begin its defense of the FAA championship.  With a number of key players graduating last season, the team is excited for new players to step in and fill those shoes.  This year’s team will be led by senior captains Gabe Regan, Serafim Rocco, and Michael Mossman.  The team will open its season with a scrimmage at St Luke's on Friday, will host John Jay in a scrimmage on Saturday, and then will travel to Portledge on Monday, November 25, for its first game.

Girls' Varsity Squash: The team is looking to build a fit team this year, and with four seniors Sydney Ginsberg, Samantha Cooper, Gabriella Johnson, and Gabrielle Salomon, we can expect a great season. There are 9 returners, and Mackenzie Martin and Cristina Johnson are the two new players on the team. Add the two Kimmel sisters, and we have a strong number one and two position, and we hope to elevate our play throughout the season.

The members of the team are:
Sydney Ginsberg '14
Gabriela Johnson '14
Samantha Cooper '14
Gabrielle Salomon '14
Caroline Kimmel '15
Michelle Haut '15
Mariana Lee '15
Madeleine Pierpont '16
Catherine Kimmel '17
Cristina Johnson '17
Mackenzie Martin '17

The first home match will be against Greens Farms on Thursday, December 5, at 4:30 p.m. Please come and support the girls’ varsity team!

Girls' Varsity Ice Hockey: The team has been working hard on the ice during practices. Our season opener, and first home game, will be Wednesday, November 28, against Canterbury. Returning members of the team include: Captain Ciara Claire, and assistant captain Jamie Simensky, as well as Haley Shea, Charlotte Fleischman, Stephanie O’Brien, Maddie Lyons, Sarah Ince, and Juliet FitzPatrick. Key newcomers to the program are Katherine Holtby, Olivia Weaver, Claire Monahan, and Gracyn Campbell. This is head coach Courtney Doucette’s second season with the Wildcats, assisted by coaches Gil Castagna, Emily Kuchta, and Anthony Felice. We are looking forward to a great season.

Boys' Varsity Squash: The team looks to build on an impressive 2012-2013 season. With only two seniors graduating, the team boasts eight returnees from last year's squad who will work to improve on their 12th-place finish in the New England Tournament a year ago. Senior captains James Pierpont and Will Chai will be instrumental in leading the team against some of the top programs in the country. This week will conclude the tryout process, as we have 21 players trying out for two spots on the varsity and ten open positions on the JV roster. It is wonderful to see so many talented students interested in playing squash at RCDS. Over the next few months, we will be working hard in order to peak when we compete in the High School National Championships and the New England Championships. The season opens at home against The Hotchkiss School on Wednesday, December 4.

Girls' Varsity Basketball: The team has started tryouts. The girls have been working hard in attempts to make the varsity squad that captured the Fairchester League title last year. The coaches have been impressed with their enthusiasm, hard work, and overall positive attitude. We are looking forward to an exciting season.

Varsity Fencing: The fencers and the coaches of the RCDS Fencing Program are very excited for the 2013 -2014 season. We have over 40 fencers who will be divided into eight teams. We have the varsity foil teams, varsity epee teams, and varsity saber teams (both male and female for each weapon). We also have junior varsity foil teams for males and females. The four coaches, Patrick Early (Saber), Leif Halverson (Epee and J.V.), Kyle Mitschele (female foil) and Joe Rue (male foil) will work in close conjunction with the female captains (Emma Chu and Michael Katzovitz), and the male captains (Kevin Collado and Naropa Perez). In addition, Maddy Gallagher, Eric Duarte, and Josh Rivera will be acting as squad leaders. We have begun conditioning and footwork, and everyone seems pumped to have a strong season. Our first encounter will be on December 5 against Hackley. So, wish us a great kick off to an exciting season. One final note, we will be setting up an e-mail for the parents to be informed of events and to maintain correspondence with this important faction of our program.

Varsity Wrestling: The team has been working hard in practice in its first week of the season. We are committed to rebuilding our program and to bounce back from last year. Our total numbers have increased from the past few years. The combination of returning veterans and talented newcomers will certainly strengthen our line up. Returning captains, Dylan Bronson and George Matelich, will lead us through practices and matches. Dylan Bronson is a fierce competitor, who leads the pace of our practices. George Matelich has committed his entire summer to wrestling. Marc Schneider and Max Wright are two other seniors who should do well for us. In addition, Pete Sanchez, Sean Chan, Max Pil, Curtis Wilson, Justin Chun, and Sean Price all have one year of varsity experience. We look forward to the efforts of newcomers Arthur Nagashima, Riley Faulk, and Hannes Boehning, who demonstrate a strong wrestling background. We start our season on December 7, when we head off to the Canterbury Tournament in New Milford, Conn.

Squash Lessons & Clinics: Private Squash Lessons are available at RCDS throughout the year. Private lessons are available on the weekend and are 45 minutes long. There is also availability for semi-private lessons (2 kids).

Saturday squash clinics are held at the following times:
9 a.m.-9:45 a.m. for students in Grades 2-5
3:30 p.m-4:15 p.m for students in Grades 6-8

Squash clinics are a great way for kids to play with other kids while getting instruction and working on their game. There is no sign up required.
