Girls' Varsity Lacrosse: The team went 1-1 this week. The team had a solid victory against the Portledge School on Wednesday. Every member of the team played in the game. Stephanie Sabatini and Zoe Verni were recognized for their outstanding play. On Saturday the Wildcats hosted the Hackley Hornets. In the first half, the girls did a nice job of draw control and had some good passing combinations. The defense was relentless about doubling the ball and causing turnovers in the midfield. Summer Elbardissy had an outstanding half in the goal. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to maintain that consistency in the second half. These inconsistencies cost us critical turnovers and goals. Stephanie Sabatini, Annie Grayer, Clare McClintock, Emily Duarte, Mariana Lee, and Sam Kost all played well. We are an extremely young team. We have three seniors, three juniors, eight sophomores, and five freshman. We have a lot of work to do but we also have talent in our young players. We are confident that by the end of the season, we'll be a cohesive and more experienced team. The team has three big games coming up this week: St. Luke’s, Convent of the Sacred Heart, and Hopkins.
Boys' Varsity Lacrosse: The team continues to put forth a terrific effort, and the coaches couldn't be more proud of what they have seen on the field. A perfect example of this is our recent game against the Gunnery School. We knew they would be talented and physical, and that they were. We dug ourselves a little hole, giving up 3 quick goals. However, the team quickly settled in, got their feet under them, and scored the next four goals to end the 1st quarter up one. We won the second quarter 4-3, as well, and headed into halftime up 8-6. Dylan Bass scored four of our eight first-half goals, while Will Halloran scored two and Tommy Garry and Tyler Miller added one a piece. The second half was a back and forth battle, and with six minutes left, Kyle Halloran's hockey-style goal brought us within one; however, that was the closest we'd get, as Gunnery made a couple of more plays to seal the victory. Defensively, we are continuing to play more cohesively and gain more experience. Jonathan Singer, Michael Farber, and Brian DiSanto played very well, as they limited their attackmen to just a couple of points. Moving forward, it will be nice to get back to FAA action, as we play Kingswood-Oxford tomorrow and KING on Tuesday.
Varsity Baseball: The team finished last week 1 and 1, bringing the win loss record to 3 and 2 (3 and 1 in the league). The big game was the win at defending league champs Hopkins on Tuesday. Tyler Fernandez went 5 strong innings while striking out 7 and allowing 2 runs. Enzo Stefanoni picked up his first varsity save going the last two innings getting himself out of 2nd and 3rd , and bases loaded situations in the 6th and 7th innings. Stephen Knight was 1 for 3 on the day, driving in 2 runs. Liam Dalton and Luke Cappellano each had a rbi as well. On Wednesday, the Wildcats lost to Rye Neck. Stephen Knight, Tyler Fernandez, Liam Dalton, Billy Grossman, and Ryan Wolitzer each had a hit. It was the first varsity hit for both Billy Grossman and Ryan Wolitzer. Liam Dalton drove home the only run on the day for the Wildcats. The Hamden Hall game was canceled on Friday due to rain and will be made up on Monday, April 29.
Varsity Softball: The team improved to 4-0 after posting wins last week versus Greenwich Academy 13-3 and Millbrook 8-1. Against GA, the team belted out 15 hits, which included a home run by Taylor Forte (2-3, 2 Rbi's), and a double by Sydney Ginsberg (3-4, RBI). Others who contributed were: Jess Grasso (1-3, RBI), Nereida Mendez (2-4, 2 Rbi's), AmberRose Nelson (1-3, 2 Rbi's), Lily Velona (2-2, 2 Rbi's), and Eve Wulf helped her own cause going 3-3 while striking out 3 and scattering 6 hits to get the win. The Millbrook game was closer than the score indicated. Their pitcher was the toughest we faced this season. We only managed 8 hits, but they were timely. Nereida Mendez led the way, going 3-4 including a double and 3 Rbi's. AmberRose Nelson continues to swing a hot bat, going 2-3 with a triple and an RBI. Melanie Mandell (2-3, RBI) and Lily Velona (1-3) also remain consistent offensively. The team is playing solid defense as well, assisting Eve Wulf, who only give up 4 hits. The team hopes to continue its success this week as it travels to St Luke's on Wednesday, April 17, and hosts Riverdale on Friday, April 19.
Boys' Varsity Tennis: The team opened its season against Section 1 Champion Byram Hills last Tuesday. Unfortunately, it was a loss. There were some very close matches, especially with a three set, super tie-break with number-one singles player Bo Curry, and another by the doubles team of Adam Kozek and Nick Wilmer. This past Friday, the team hosted an FAA match with the Masters School. The team won the match 7-0. There were some outstanding matches. Singles players all won, Bo Curry, 6-0, 6-0, Sam Hearst, 6-1, 6-1, Tyler Tananbaum, 6-1, 6-4, Ted Tananbaum, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. The doubles teams did as well with scores of: Nick Kemp / Paul Leake, 6-2, 6-0, Robert Levine / Jack Alpert, 6-0, 6-4, and John Faxon / Nick Wilmer, 6-0, 6-1. This week the Wildcats will travel to Millbrook on Wednesday, and Thursday will be home again against FAA 2012 Champion Hopkins School.
Varsity Sailing: The team will be practicing all week on the waters of Captains Harbor in Greenwich to prepare for the NYISA-SE League Fleet Race Invitational. The regatta will be held at the Waterfront Center in Oysterbay, Long Island on April 20.
Girls' Varsity Golf: This past week, team traveled to Watertown, Conn., to play Taft and CSH. Summer Kitahara, Jasmine Kitahara, Kate Weiss, Bryce Smith, and Sammy Friedwald made up the fivesome. Kate Weiss brought home the only win against Taft, but two other matches came down to the final hole. Against CSH, Jasmine Kitahara and Kate Weiss came in with wins, and the match was tied up at two all. As the sun was setting and the temperature dropping, senior Samantha Friedwald, playing in her debut varsity match, came into view. She played a solid round to bring home the win over CSH. On Monday, Summer Kitahara, Jasmine Kitahara, Kate Weiss, Bryce Smith, Madison Friedman, Emily Gorin, Stef Kligman, and Andie Hearst all defeated Riverdale Day School at Apawamis. On Wednesday, April 17, the girls play Holy Child, and on Thursday, April 18, King will host at Sterling Farms.
Boys' Varsity Golf: The team evened up its record to 2-2 with a dramatic win over Horace Mann at Sunningdale Golf Club. Captains Reed Waggoner and Theodore Humphrey led the team. Daniel Tricarico and Zachary Coppola also turned in strong performances. The team looks for its third win against Portledge later this week.
Varsity Track and Field: At the Hackley meet, the team participated at its first Ivy Developmental meet and performed well. Teams that competed were Collegiate, Riverdale, and Hackley. Individual victors were Salim Green in the triple jump (38'10), Tara Berger in the high jump (4'6), and Franchesca Pena in the 800 meter run (2:44). Lastly, the boys and girls 4x400 relays were both victorious. The quartets of Olivia Sullivan, Julie Shanus, Franchesca Pena, Catherine Walker, and Salim Green, Alec Boccanfuso, Dylan Bronson, and Tyler Kaye ran well and staved off all the competition.
On Saturday, April 13, the Wildcats had a great day at the Ossining Relays. The girls had a tremendous showing by medaling in five events. The quartet of sophomore Caroline Kimmel, freshman Jinjer Pearce, senior Julie Shanus, and freshman Olivia Sullivan took home the gold medals in the 4 x 100, 4 x 200, and 4 x 400 meter relays. Their times in the two latter relays broke the school record, and their 4 x 200 meter relay time has qualified them for the National Meet. The Girls JV Distance Medley Relay got the party started well with a fourth-place finish. The team of sophomore Sarah Brodwolf, junior Franchesca Pena, and freshmen Sabrina Piccinini and Maddy Pierpont ran a very spirited race. The 4 x 800 meter relay team also placed fourth with Sarah Brodwolf, Franchesca Pena, Maddy Pierpont, and freshman Catherine Walker running a good qualifying NYSAIS time. Special shout out to sophomores Sophie Grayer, Christine Campisi, freshmen Nicola Leake, Leigh Weiss, and Alex Zuber for a spirited day of running and competition.
The Boys also had a good day by placing in the JV Medley Relay. Junior Kevin Collado, freshmen Kyle Eagan, Jimmy Sandling, and Jared Yanis cruised to a fourth-place finish. The 4 x 200 meter relay team of juniors Dylan Bronson, Nat Cooney, freshman Jimmy Sandling, and senior Andrew Gillen ran a swift time for a fourth-place finish. Finally, the Sprint Medley relay of juniors Nat Cooney, Dylan Bronson, Vlady Rachev, and freshman Kyle Eagan also finished in fourth place. Some notable performances were by sophomore Ryan Wilk, junior Marco Bohorquez, and junior George Matelich with a personal record performance in the Discus throw. The Wildcats will be in action again on Tuesday April 16, when they take on Masters and Holy Child.
